To Drink or Not to Drink: A Beginner’s Guide to Whiskey

· whisky online

It’s probably just now that you started exploring different types of alcohol and it’s likely that one of them are whiskeys.

But, exactly what are they and what sets them apart from any other alcoholic beverages? Keep reading to discover.

What is Whiskey?
• The word ‘whiskey’ is derived from the Gaelic term ‘uisce beatha’ which literally means water of life.
• It is processed from fermented grain mash and often aged in wooden casks, where they are distilled to a minimum of 40% ABV.

• It can be made from different types of grains like corn, barley, wheat, sorghum, or rye.
• The choice of grains is heated together with water and fermented to create a ‘mash’.
• This process breaks down the starches in the grain into sugars, creating a dark liquid called ‘wort’.
Different Types of Whiskey

• Japanese Whiskey
Japanese whiskeys are known for their smooth, delicate, and often honey-perfumed flavour. Hibiki is a premium blended Japanese whiskey that’s in-demand worldwide today.
Did You Know? Aside from Hibiki, there’s also the Yamazaki Whisky, a branded single malt whiskey produced from the first and oldest malt distillery in Japan.

• Scotch Whiskey
Scotch drinkers love this beverage’s potency, rich history, and tradition. It is made from malted barley that is aged for no less than three years in Scotland.

• Irish Whiskey
Light, fruity and way less peaty than a Scotch whiskey, this beverage is made by distilling three times in a copper pot. It’s available in single malt, grain, single grain, blended, or single pot still.

• American Whiskey
What separates most American whiskeys from their European counterpart is that they’re aged in new charred oak barrels and kept to under 80% ABV. They’re generally sweeter, less smokey and less peaty than Irish and Scotch whiskeys.
